Summary
The Chagos Archipelago (BIOT) MPA was implemented in 2010 as IUCN category 1A reserve (strict nature reserve) and was at the time the largest in the world. This seminar will review the background and current legislation and policy concerning Very Large MPAs for fisheries management and biodiversity conservation. Considering the Chagos MPA as a case study I will discuss ongoing challenges in MPA management, as well as outstanding research questions concerning VLMPAs, including driver of Illegal Unreported Unregulated fisheries, and enforcement strategies.
